A shelf cloud usually appears on a convective system with downdraft. When the downdraft air currents expand outward, it will lift the surrounding warm air forming shelf clouds. When a squall line passes by, shelf cloud will appear first, followed by violent thunder and lightning, strong gusts, and heavy rainfall.
